In search of the “Ideal” Landscape
“The ideal landscape picture is one that awakens in us emotions of pleasure and enjoyment. It appeals to us because it is beautiful in itself apart from any historical or geographical value.”
These criteria were included in a 1911 text for the American School of Art and Photography. I believe that an “Ideal” landscape should be timeless, but does the ideal landscape have to elicit the emotions of pleasure and enjoyment. What about other emotions?
